Max was born March 8th, 1995, he was sired by my first Rottweiler, Rufus, was from my first litter and was healthy from day one. In his life he had very few vet visits other than normal dog related issues .
Max was owned by very good friends of mine and raised with 2 children (both were born during his life). He loved people and he loved children.
In April 2008, a month after he turned 13, (3/8/2008) Max had an appointment for his yearly check up and was in great health. The vet was thrilled at his overall condition and could not believe he was 13.
The vet gave him his yearly checkup, and said she would see him on his 14th birthday. She then preceded to give Max his vaccines all at once DHLP and Rabies. Max went home and within hours was not his normal self.
Two days later Max quietly passed after getting progressively worse. He had stopped eating, and would not get up to go outside and then passed in his owners arms.
I believe that it was a vaccine reaction that caused Max to pass in an untimely manner.
Above is a picture of Max taken in September of 2007, the last time I saw him and he was a spritely old gentleman, still going up and down stairs and playing. In a note from his owner just weeks before his death they told me of how he was playful and acting like a pup. It was hard to believe he was 13.
Why did this vet overlook the protocol for not vaccinating an elderly dog?
Why was it so important that she collect her fees on a dog that did not go anywhere where he could possible contract rabies?
Why was it that she never took responsibility for breaking the hearts of his family when he should have lived for a good length of time longer?
Why is it that breeders like myself and owners know more about current vaccination issues and protocols that a working vet?
I keep my vet informed by taking him articles that I come across and latest information so that he has no excuse for not knowing.
We miss you Max...RIP
Thanks for being the best friend for a couple of wonderful kids.
Max was the son of my Rufus, so he was my "son".
Max was loved and cherished by the Heredia Family, Steve, Elissa, Andrew & Nikki.
